The Story of the Zodiac Braves
There once was a land called Ivalice, and in that land, our story takes place.
Our
story begins concerns the "Lion War". It divided Ivalice in two over
who would be successor to the throne. It ended with the appearance of a
young hero named Delita.
Everybody living in Ivalice knows this hero's tale...
But we also know that what we see with our eyes alone...
Is not always as it appears.
A young man, nameless in history until now is brought into the light.
He was the youngest son of the noble Beoulve's, a family whose sons were the pillars of knighthood throughout time.
There's no historian's record of his playing an active part in the Lion War but...
According
to the Durai Report, which was concealed for many years by the church,
this unkown Ramza Beoulve was the true hero of the Lion War.
The Church claims he was a blasphemer and anarchist, the essence of evil.
But is this the "truth"?
This story is a journey for the "truth".
It
was a storm swept night outside the secure walls of Orbonne Monastery.
Concealed within the stone structure, a princess was deep in prayer.
"God, please help us sinful children of Ivalice."
Princess
Ovelia Atkascha had returned to her place of tutelage to pray for the
future of her country and visit her mentor, a priest named Simon. She
was escorted by her loyal guardian, Agrias, a few of Agrias'
knightmaidens, and a handful of mercenary bodyguards.
The head
of those mercenaries was a Dark Knight by the name of Gafgarion, and
one of his mercenaries was none other than Ramze Beoulve, who was
living under the name Ramza Darven.
Agrias disliked Gafgarion
very much. She disliked him for his profession, she disliked him for
his lack of honor, and she disliked him for his scorn of a Knight's
proper duty.
But other thing's were occupying Agrias' mind at that particular time.
"Lady Agrias! The enemy!"
The warning sounded over the raging storm that was going on outside.
The
enemy of the royal branch of the monarchy was a Prince named Goltana,
who contended that he should be rightful regent of the throne. His
Knight's were known as the Nanten.
Agrias, Gafgarion, Ramza, the
knightmaidens, and the mercenaries did battle with the Nanten Knights
outside Orbonne Monastery, and the defenders of the princess rose above
their conquered foes. Goltana's Nanten had wanted Princess Ovelia, and
as the princess' bodyguard were about to find out, someone had
kidnapped her.
The mysterious Knight in golden armor had
captured the princess through the back entrance whilst her bodyguards
were doing battle with the Nanten troops. As the mysterious Knight rode
away on his steed, Ramza was lost in thought...
"Delita? You're alive? But, why are you in Goltana's
troops? Why...?"
Delita
and his sister Teta had been of lower class of birth, but Delita, being
Ramza's friend, and Teta being the friend of Ramza's sister Alma were
taken care of by way of the Beoulve wealth. Delita and Ramza had
attended military academy together in the Magic City of Gariland, years
ago.
After a political leader was captured, they became wrapped
up in his rescue. But that is another tale entirely. The important
thing to know is that Delita's sister was murdered by a cadet named
Algus whom Ramza and Delita considered to be their friend.
Obsessed
with classes of birth, Algus had thrown away the life of Delita's
sister Teta without a second thought in an effort to catch a rebel
Knight. Driven mad with rage, Delita murdered Algus, but just after
Delita had reaped his bloody revenge, the fort at which they had
cornered the rebel was caught up in a massive explosion caused by the
huge stock of gunpowder within the fort.
Lacking any other
option, Ramza had thrown himself clear of the blast, changed his name,
and presumed Delita dead. Until that moment when he saw him galloping
away with the unconcious Princess Ovelia draped over his sadle.
One
other important man was revealed in that time of Ramza's youth. Part of
the rebel movement, a Knight named Wiegraf, whose sister was Miluda.
Miluda was killed by Ramza in battle, but only after she had refused
his mercy. Wiegraf had suggested that Ramza's older brothers, Zalbag
and Dycedarg Beoulve had orchestrated the capture of the political
leader to help further efforts of the official royal regent, Prince
Larg, to secure his hold over Ivalice. These Knights of the Prince
Larg, whose commanders were Dycedarg and Zalbag, were known as the
Hokuten.
