What Emo Is
I think emo is less a reflection of the exaggeration of your own
problems, but rather the act on the part of the people who support you
to disregard your problems. Or giving you the feeling that they
wouldn't take your problems seriously.
Here's how I think it is, a person has a problem. One of two things happens:
a) the friend doesn't take the problem seriously
b) the friend gives the impression they don't take the problem seriously.
Then, the person becomes "emo". They exaggerate their own problem for two reasons:
1) To make themselves feel more justified for feeling so crappy about what the problem is when in
reality it has more to do with feeling a lack of support from their friends.
2) To make their friends care about their problems. They exaggerate,
hoping that a more seriousseeming problem will get their attention.
The result has the opposite effect, however, as the "emo" person's
friends think they are simply self-centered, naive, and making an even
bigger deal out of a problem that isn't there.
However, it is important to
note, that when a person has an honestly difficult problem it doesn't
necessarily mean it would be honestly difficult for EVERYONE to deal
with, just for them. IE just because you wouldn't struggle with
competitive loss doesn't mean that it isn't a serious issue for a
friend.
Simply put: take your friend's problems seriously if for no other
reason than because they do. You don't have to pander to them or make
them feel like martyrs, but a little empathy and compassion go a long
way.
