If you destroy your opponent you destroy yourself. The destruction of another's dignity destroys your own dignity. To humiliate another is to humiliate yourself. This is because if they are unworthy to have dignity or are deemed expendable, or able to be destroyed or humiliated, then everyone is unworthy of dignity and should be destroyed.

We have all had one terrible wrong doing in our past that is worse than anything else we have ever done, and have done one thing that was greater than anything we have ever done before. Therefore, we are all the same morally. So if you must be destroyed, so must I. If one is judged we are all judged equally and no one stands before the judge as a man with no weaknesses nor mistakes nor regrets.

This is why we must be compassionate towards all people and seek to see them as they should be seen. People should be seen in three ways, as they are, as they might've been, and as they see themselves. This is the way to have compassion for people, but the most important of these is to see what they might've been. See the accomplishments they wish they could have made, the great deeds left undone, and the mistakes that were never righted, but were intended to be. This is the measure of a person.

If you have no compassion of your own, then you must learn it from another, and anyone who teaches you compassion can be your teacher, and any material that teaches you compassion can be your holy book, because compassion is the epitomy of goodness, when it is acted upon.

Remember that when you forget the self, you must think on others, so a person must do their best to forget their own needs and wants to pursue helping someone else fulfill their needs, and in so doing be filled themselves, because if one thing is true it is that helping another person in a meaningful way is one of the few useful things you can do in life.

Remember also, that if you do not know joy, you cannot pass it on to others. So while you must forget your unimportant superficial needs, it is equally important that you enjoy yourself in life, because an unhappy helper can be very unpleasant and is unlikely to teach anyone much of anything even if you have managed to help them with their immediate problem.
